Ellen G. White claimed to be shown by God that their teachings on dress reform are a great test of the present day and that some Adventist ministers will be responsible for the lost souls of some due to not being tidy enough.
The Bible nowhere says such a thing. While things like modesty are biblical (1 Timothy 2:9-10, 1 Peter 3:3-4), nothing in scripture says anything to the effect of it being a great test to see if one is truly a Christian or not. Modesty also entails more than just ones dress. Various cultures in various parts of the world have very different dress customs. To say the Adventist standard of dress (which was influenced by 19th century North America) is a test for the whole world as to whether someone is a Christian or not is false, legalistic and untrue.
The Bible is clear that people reject Christ, not because of someone being untidy, but because fallen sinners hate God (Romans 1:30), cannot seek for God (Romans 3:10-11), and love their sin—not wanting it to be exposed by Jesus the Light (John 3:19-21).
