By way of Ellen G. White, the Adventist Church teaches that Adam and Eve were clothed with “white robes of light” and, when they fell, they became naked by losing that robe of light.
The Bible doesn’t say this anywhere. This is what we call an “Advent-ism.” Adam and Eve were created naked (Genesis 2:25) and felt no shame. When they fell, they experienced shame over their nakedness (Genesis 3:6-7). The Bible doesn’t say they had robes of white light that they lost and became naked.
Adventist apologists have tried to use Psalm 104:1-2 to defend this by conflating what’s said there with Genesis 3:21. Since man is made in God’s image, and the Psalter poetically says God is enshrouded in light, that must mean Adam and Eve had robes of light.
This is unsound reasoning as Genesis says they were given garments of skin, not light. The Psalter using poetics around God being enshrouded in light should not then be read back into the Genesis accounting simply because the term “garment” is used in both cases. God is not clothed in a garment of skin as God is spirit (John 4:24) and spirit does not possess flesh and bone (Luke 24:39). This is the fruit of the SDA Church having an erroneous view of what it means to be made in the image of God. They think that means man’s physical appearance. Their god is three distinct beings who all possess physical forms like humans have. But that isn’t what being made in God’s image means. Again, the One True God is spirit and spirit does not have flesh and bone.
Ellen White very clearly contradicts scripture by saying the pair became naked after the fall when scripture plainly says they were created naked and unashamed. The fall brought about a recognition of their nakedness which then resulted in them experiencing shame (Genesis 3:11).
Mrs. White claimed that “whatever contradicts God’s Word, we can be sure proceeds from Satan”, that her writings never contradict God’s Word, and bear the test of investigation. She made this claim about Adam and Eve in her book Patriarchs and Prophets which she claimed the words in are “barricaded by a thus saith the Lord.”
We’ll let you connect the dots.
