Unpacking SDA Confusion: Is Jesus Michael the Archangel?

All right thank you for joining us especially if this is your first time with us Adventist or otherwise I know that we have a lot of first timers here so an especially warm welcome to you tonight we’re going to be looking at the Seventh Adventist Church’s teaching regarding Michael the Archangel this is a topic we get a lot of questions about and something that to be fair to the SDA Church there’s a lot of confusion on as it pertains to their position many people saddled the SDA church with the belief of the Jehovah’s Witnesses that Jesus is a created

Angelic being others will hear Adventists appeal to some of the Protestant reformers to try and say they held to an identical belief as them which is also something that the Jehovah’s Witnesses do but what we are going to see is that this appeal is superficial so it’s important to remember in this context that the Seventh Day Adventist movement is not Orthodox when it comes to the trinity and that matters on top of this it’s important to understand the central role that this belief plays in Adventist eschatology and theology in general which is why

They will defend it so vly it is not just a tertiary belief it is not well you may believe this or you may not believe this systematically it is not optional it is needed for their whole system to work so tonight we’re going to listen to a presentation on the subject from SDA Pastor Doug Bachelor not for any particular reason with him other than he presents the Adventist position in a somewhat succinct and to Theo manner I think some of that is due to the fact that Doug is used to being on TV and being able to hold to a time slot so it makes it really nice to be able to

Don’t abide by these unspoken internet rules that I’m apparently only allowed to have on guests that think and believe exactly like I do so I’m sure tonight will be no different but either way I appreciate you lending uh lending us some of your time with that said let’s get right into it because we have a good amount of stuff here to look at amen so we’ll be studying this I’d like to begin by having you turn to a passage it’s the last chapter in The Book of Daniel I know Pastor Ross has been going through Daniel he’ll be getting to this chapter

Soon so I’m not going to go into great depth but I want you to read the first couple of verses Daniel 12 verse 1 and 2 and at that time Michael will stand up the great Prince the great Prince who stands watch over the sons of your people and there will be a time of trouble such as never was since there was a nation Jesus refers to this in Matthew and Mark when he talks about the second coming he says you know after the tribulation of those days there’s going to be a time of trouble such as there never has been ever since there was a nation he’s referring back to U this

Statement in Daniel 12 such as never was since there was a nation even to that time and at that time your people will be delivered great Deliverance everyone who is found written in the book The Book of Life and many of those who sleep in the dust of the Earth shall awake some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt tells us that there’s going to be a resurrection some are saved and some are lost a great time of trouble and all of this is triggered by Michael the great Prince standing up so we need to find out who is this

God wants us to understand it’s in his word it’s in a prophecy to understand the prophecy you need to know who the characters

Are oh I can’t you’re muted rookie mistake sorry about that all right so so a couple weeks ago we listen to SDA Pastor Steven bore present the es uh the SDA eschatological time line regarding their theory around the time of trouble beginning in correlation to Daniel 121 saying that Michael will stand up but then he says in order to understand the prophecy Doug did one needs to know who the characters are and I agree so Sam before we progress and listen any further yes who would you argue Michael the Archangel is according to scripture by going to the sound ex

Aesus of scripture Archangel Michael is not Jesus Christ Our Lord it’s not one of his names yes we do believe and this is where they confound the issue and this is where they confuse people because the evidence does show and I didn’t want to listen to this the evidence does show that Jesus Christ and his pre-own existence appeared throughout the Hebrew scriptures as the angel of Yahweh the angel of God because for those of you who’ve been following this young man and I highly recommend a channel and I’m not just saying it to say it I didn’t think God is using him

Mightily I wouldn’t be on his channel and the Lord preserve him and us if you’ve been following this young man if you’ve been following my channel the word Angel Mal is a Hebrew term or in Greek angos means messenger so what I want everyone else who may be coming to this for the first time to condition themselves to start thinking angel means messenger that’s all it means it means messenger depending on the context that messenger can be a Heavenly messenger or an Earthly one because even human beings are called Angels Mal angos so the term simply means messenger so Jesus Christ

In his prun existence is that messenger of God who sent by God who worshiped as God whom people identify as God who claims to be God and God himself honors as God now this is where it gets tricky because the Seven Day Adventist will take that and run with it they will say see even the early Church believe many Christian believe that Jesus is the angel of Yahweh well that means if he’s that angel then he’s Michael not necessarily because the scriptures give us enough information to conclude Michael is a creature he’s a spirit creature one of the mightiest

Spirit creatures and I would even surmise and I don’t know this for a fact because where scripture is silent we have to be careful when we conjecture and tread lightly and the spirit save us from error I would dare surmise he’s the most powerful of the spirit creatures because to him is given the authority to cast Satan from heaven and bar him from entering Heaven that’s Revelation 127 to9 but the evidence is clear at least to me that Michael is not that angel of Yahweh because that angel is God whereas Michael clearly is portrayed as a subordinate created entity and we’ll get

Into that so we need to be careful they will take the arguments of the early church that Jesus is identified as the angel of Yahweh and then make the leap to the conclusion that means he’s Michael no Michael is Spirit creature but the angel of Yahweh though Jesus is not the same as Michael and we’ll get into that we’ll look at the evidence you brought up a a a key point there and like you said we’re going to see some of this later but that is the Crux folks you have to understand this because as you’re going to see the SDA Church conflates Michael with the angel

Of the Lord and then they will point to where the angel of the Lord is clearly shown to not be an Angelic being a creature but the angel of Yahweh as Sam said so with that established let’s keep listening to what Doug has to say so who is this person well go with me now to the Book of Daniel again but we’re going to go to Daniel 10 you find Michael referenc really four times in Daniel maybe actually more than that sometimes you simply called the prince go to Daniel 10:13 I think that when God introduces someone in Prophecy he then explains it later in Daniel 10:13 it says but the

Prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me 21 days the Bible tells us Daniel was fasting and praying for 3 weeks that’s 21 days and the prince of the kingdom of Persia it’s talking about the power behind the kingdom of Persia that that was the devil he resisted me and behold Michael one of the chief princes came to help me for I had been left alone there with the kings of Persia says Kings there because you get the Persian kingdom was a dual Kingdom the mes and the Persians Meo Persian Kingdom now it says Michael one of the chief princes that word one

Throws people doesn’t mean God’s got many Chief princes the word onead in Hebrew aad and it means uh it could mean one it can mean numerically first or greatest one it’s like you would call the president’s wife the first lady it doesn’t mean she’s the only lady means that there’s a a position of honor and so it’s really saying Michael first of the chief princes or greatest of the chief princes so that’s one clue that’s not totally clear go to Daniel 10:21 same chapter but I’ll tell you what is noted in the scripture of Truth No One upholds me against these except Michael your

Prince now he’s talking to Daniel this is Gabriel talking to Daniel he says Michael your prince who is the prince oh get your credit card out there’s more turn with me now to a prophecy about the Messiah Daniel 9:2 this is one of the most important important prophecies in all of the Bible it pinpoints the first coming of Jesus I think you could have pinpointed basically the time when Christ would be born as well as the time he would be baptized and the time he would be crucified all from Daniel 9 but we’ll have to go there in a few weeks during our prophecy

Seminar know therefore and understand Daniel 9:25 that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the prince now there you have it who is the prince who is Daniel’s prince who is the chief prince who is he Messiah but some of you aren’t convinced okay okay so you’re getting an Insight here into Adventist hermeneutics they love doing stuff like this well let’s read a little bit over here then we’ll jump over here this word was used here they do a lot of word association f so the use of Michael across the Book of

Daniel links and connects him with being Jesus let’s work through these first he went to Daniel 10:13 and said it doesn’t say there are others like Michael that he’s the only one of but one in that context refers to a title of Honor or reverence as the only one Sam is he correct now I’m going to need you to engage me as well as we’re gonna bring up the Bible so because it was going to be you and me working together because you’re going to fill in details now here’s the confusion for me I can understand how je witness who believes that Jesus is the Archangel Michael in

Prem existence would argue this way because they believe that Michael is a creature and therefore Jesus created but now he believes so we’re told guys you got to listen and we ask the spirit for clarity of thought because I’m trying to put myself in his shoes he admits that the word can mean one or first and even he defines it as the greatest or the first of the princes well that means he’s not the only one because he’s the first of many princes right if you want to show it on the screen so let’s go with his definition okay he translates to mean the first meaning the

Highest but he’s still the first of many so he’s not the only one so he’s going to bring up the Bible we’re going to check this out y so let’s see it let you bring it up okay watch here Daniel so I want you to walk me through their logic so the prince of the kingdom of Persia which s me 21 days but Michael one of the chief PRS now he wants to translate it the first of the chief princes I’ll go with that but he’s still the first of many other rulers he’s not the only one right well that’s what we would say but what Doug is trying to argue and what

They’re trying to claim is that the word one here is actually referring to um it’s not saying that he’s the only one it’s saying that he is a supreme unique one distinct from from anything else and so that helps support the idea that this is talking about Jesus because no one else is like Jesus yeah but even with that argument it’s still there other princess that’s my point I’m trying to hammer Now understand the text guys watch it there still are the rulers he just happens to be unique and greater than the rest but still there are others so you can’t get around the fact there

Are others that rule now I know they don’t have a problem with others ruling here’s where I’m going to get confused all right so if he is is the greatest that’s what they’re saying right and they believe in the Trinity so he greatest right they claim to do right so I want to know if he’s the greatest of all these rulers here’s where I’m getting puzzled and I’m going to refute to claim that this is Jesus but I’m trying to understand their mindset so Jesus to them second person the Trinity even though their view the Trinity is skewed as our brother has demonstrated so if

They’re saying Jesus is the greatest right among all the rulers what does that say about the father and the Holy Spirit they don’t believe the father is also the ruler and the greatest yeah see so these are the sort of pressing questions Sam that you have to be able to ask them because it depends who you ask on this so this is why on this platform we often times focus on primary source documentation because as we’re going to see later Doug tries to make claims about the SDA position and what he believes that contradict Ellen White yet the official

Position is that that Ellen White’s commentary on any given passage is the infallible interpretation and he’s out of step with that so if you’re asking how does Doug specifically deal with that that I do not know but also I don’t know specifically on that I would have to do a little bit of digging because I don’t want to talk out the side of my neck and just give some some some claim here but um I would need to look on that specifically um and do a little bit of a systematic cross reference because that’s that’s a great Point these are the sort of questions that if you

Actually sit and work through the text um you you would actually deal with instead of this sort of driveby EX aesus of hopscotching Through the Bible yeah so explain people what my point is so you can get it because to them Jesus Is God Almighty or at least they claim that he’s God Almighty and yet he’s one with the father and the spirit that means what is said about Michael can be said about the father because if first or one of the cheap prents means the greatest of all the ruling beings in heaven because it’s talking about Spirit rulers by the way just to let you know

Daniel 10:13 is talking about the spirit realm and those who rule in the spirit realm so here Michael is the greatest of all the rulers in the Heavenly realm well that would be true the father correct so that means what is said about Michael can be said about the father so the father and the son with the spirit they are the first among all these rulers they are the greatest among all these rulers and they’re completely unique so I want to know if that’s what they believe because this ex Jesus is baffling to me coming from a trinitarian now it makes sense to me that if Michael

Is not Jesus that he’s being included in a group of rulers and he happens to be the leader of that particular group of ruling Spirit beings because the context is not talking about human rulers it’s talking about Spirit rulers so that’s a question to press them on but coming back to the issue here’s another thing he did a lot of people don’t catch this he went from Daniel 10:13 where the word for ruler is SAR SAR s a r okay now watch what he did here okay and it’s plural Sim Sim he then jumped to Daniel 925 where the Messiah anointed one is called Prince but he didn’t tell you

It’s not the same word in Daniel 10 the word is s plural Sim whereas in Daniel 9:25 the word for ruler is nagid it’s not the same word now they may be synonymous but you have to make that point in other words you can’t assume it so for the uninformed you’re gonna think oh wait Daniel 10 Daniel 10 Michael is called ruler and in Daniel 9:25 Messiah is called ruler see that makes a strong case if he’s the greatest ruler and yet the Messiah is going to be the greatest greatest ruler therefore Michael is a messiah but the problem is and if you bring up I don’t know Bible you’ll see

Daniel 10:13 it’s Sim plural of SAR whereas in Daniel 9:25 it’s nagid it’s not the same word so Sam you are catching on here and you’re showing how they’re not actually trinitarian and what they think being a trinitarian means is not what it actually means because what you’re going to find later on and this is the thing I was pointing out that Doug is out of harmony with his prophetes on is Ellen distinguished Jesus from being the almighty and she did this in multiple ways we looked at this some when I was on your channel some months ago but we’re also going to see how in a quote

Regarding Jude nine she distinguishes Michael from the almighty but she says in that same quote and they teach that Jesus is Michael so that’s the issue with their position it’s a unique hybrid position it’s not the same as the Jehovah’s Witnesses on one hand they want to say well no no no he wasn’t created but then on the other hand there’s a distinguishing at least when it comes to their prophetess I know sdas individual sdas will try to tell you no no no I believe that Jesus is the almighty but when it comes to the ultimate Authority sources you have a catch 22 y Daniel we

Word there is s plural form Sim so we can just confirm so people can see it it’s not even the same now you can say it’s synonymous terms but the point was this is one of his proof texts meaning one of his strong arguments that see messiah’s ruler Michael is ruler therefore they’re the same person well you’re going to have to then show number one that nagid and SAR are being used synonymously not simply asserted and then again you’re assuming that if the Messiah is ruling and Michael is ruling Israel they must be one in the same person and I’m going to show you why

Now I don’t know if he brings it up if he doesn’t I’ll address it now okay so if you see where it says mhia nagid it’s Messiah I can’t see I need glasses brother so yeah if you scroll down you’ll see until here Messiah there’s the word now watch the word it’s nagid see it yep right there it’s not the same word so number one it’s not the same word number two what I think he’s getting at now if he says it later on we can address it if not I can refute it now does he then show well because Messiah is Israel’s R ruler Michael is Israel’s ruler they’re the

Daniel 9 messiah’s called ruler Daniel 10 Michael is called the greatest of rulers so he’s a ruler messiah’s ruler ipsofacto they’re one and the same well no make it clear to your audience who trust you that they’re not the same Hebrew words and then make a case that though they’re not the same Hebrew words they’re being used synonymously don’t simply assert that prove it go ahead yep well now the second point that he said so the issue there was again like I said earlier word association fallacy they do this a lot they’ll see a word one place and then they’ll see a word another

Place and then they make some sort of inference and connection and say Well it it must be that Jesus is Michael because well over here he said this and he said this that was the problem there but then he went on to say that Daniel or he pointed to Daniel 10:21 where Michael is called Daniel’s Prince and then he links that like you said with one of their foundational proof texts for prophecy Daniel 9:25 now Sam they claim all sorts of stuff as you heard him point to that I think you can point to the crucifixion date and the baptism of Jesus this gets

Into their whole chronological timeline around their eschatology um they they claim that Daniel 9:25 is a is a prophecy about Jesus’s first Advent but he says this verse says the Messiah the prince which therefore makes Michael the Messiah because Michael was called the prince right exactly that’s their fallacy yes but but that that he has to be the Michael has to be the Messiah right because he’s he’s called the prince correct precisely that’s well because that’s the whole argument because of Messiah is the ruler and yet you have Michael as the

Greatest ruler and Michael rules Israel that’s the argument Michael rules Israel Messiah rules Israel Michael is Israel’s Prince Messiah is Israel’s Prince therefore the same person this is the point he’s trying to make yep so let’s continue here but remember that folks that’s very important here because he’s now going to launch off of that as well as one of the other presuppositions that Sam talked about earlier and that’s the angel of the Lord these two things are foundational to this claim so remember that look with me in your Bibles we just read this a moment ago in

Revelation 12 this was our memory verse talking about the Supreme Commander another way that he is introduced is the Supreme Commander so I’m going to tell you I believe the Bible teaches when I first heard this I thought what and then as I studied and the more I studied the more convinced I became oh yeah the evidence is pretty overwhelming I believe that Michael is Jesus in his pre- Incarnation appearances and he is not an angel he is not a cherub or a seraphim the word angel means a messenger his very name means who is as God chief of God’s hosts

Or his angels and you’ll see this is a position that he holds all through the Bible Revelation 12:7 and war broke out in heaven Michael and his angels fought with the dragon and the dragon and his angels fought well just right on the surface let me ask you who is the dragon do you normally call him the dragon or is that a symbolic name for the devil how many G it’s a symbolic name that’s not a trict question the answer is yes so if it’s saying that there is a symbolic name being used here to identify the chief of evil the devil then why would it surprise us that it

Uses one of the symbolic names for Jesus who is as God when it talks about Michael it says Michael and his angels so whoever this individual is he has angels whose angels are they look in Matthew 16: 27 so this is not a milk Bible study today this is a meat Bible study I count it I’ve got 35 verses so wake up we have not yet begun to study for the son of man will come in the glory of the father with his angels whose angels are they Jesus angels look at Matthew 24:31 and there’s others we could go to he will send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet and they’ll

Gather together his elect from the Four Winds from one end of Heaven to the other so it tells us that this Commander is a commander of angels okay so Sam since the text uses a symbolic title of dragon for Satan yeah it makes sense that one would be used for Jesus as well in this case Michael and because it says Michael has angels and Matthew says Jesus is coming with his angels this further proves that Jesus is Michael yep now one thing we need to do is show them the context if you open up Revelation 12 now guys watch here so we’re going to go through the

Scripture and it’s going to take me a little bit to unpack so he understand he goes look the dragon Revelation 127 that’s a symbolic name for Satan therefore Michael’s a symbolic name for Jesus you understand his argument guys I’m going to repeat the argument he’s saying just like Revelation 12 the dragon is symbolic name for Satan therefore Michael is a symbolic name for Jesus Christ now here’s the problem though when he opens up the text read verse nine for me read verse nine and the Great Dragon was thrown down that ancient serpent who is called the devil and Satan the

Deceiver of the whole world who was thrown down to the Earth and his angels were thrown down with him my first question to Doug would be how did you know that the dragon is a symbolic name for Satan how what would his answer be because the text right I mean if he yeah he would say because the text correct now guys you got to listen so my question to Doug would be Doug how did you know the dragon is reference to Satan oh because the text says it but what if the text didn’t say it how do you know that the dragon isn’t a metaphor for something else because the

Text tells us the dragon is Satan devil well then why didn’t the text simply come out and say Michael ises Jesus Christ you see the yeah because it’s just word association fallacy or I guess in this case it’s not exactly that but it’s a form of that it’s it’s these sort of inferences that like well a symbolic title is used for Satan so it makes sense that because Jesus is opposite of him and this is his great controversy worldview filtering things that Jesus is at war with Satan and it’s this sort of yin-yang back and forth type thing and they’ll tell you of course no no Jesus

Is above Satan they’re not on the same playing field um but that’s the sort of uh worldview that’s underg guring this is that you have Satan and his angels versus Jesus and his angels and since the leader of Satan’s angels has a title Dragon given to him well then it just it makes logical sense that uh there’d be a title like that for Jesus as well and it’s Michael yeah well that that doesn’t follow because I’m going to go to the second point so guys bear with us first of all just like the text told me dragon is a name for Satan the devil then the

Text could have simply made it very explicitly clear Michael is a name for Christ that’s number one so that backfires against Doug if you’re listening let me know you’re getting the point Doug just like the text said dragon is Satan and devil why didn’t the text come out saying Michael is Jesus Christ so that actually doesn’t help your case it refutes you because John could have made it clear that Michael is Jesus just like he made it clear the dragon of Satan but secondly the itself sh shows Michael is not the Christ the Christ is not Michael now let’s read

Revelation 12 verses 1 to seven slowly because I’m GNA show you what the context is all about okay it’s the enthronement of the Christ child that results in Michael having the authority to Bar Satan from Heaven we’re gonna unpack it that’s why I say we got to go slow and hopefully we don’t get off topic and confuse you guys Focus all right so I’m yep so I’m gonna read slowly here Revelation 12 and a great sign appeared in heaven a woman clothed with the sun with the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of 12 Stars she was pregnant and was

Crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth and another sign appeared in heaven Behold a great red dragon with seven heads and 10 horns and on his heads seven diadems his tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth and the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth so that when she bore her child he might devour it she gave birth to a male child one who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron but her child was caught up to God and to his throne okay pause there yep here is the Messiah he is the child born of
